From early childhood, Anne Buckley’s passion was to be a journalist. Shortly after graduating from Caldwell College in 1952 with a degree in English, the editor of the Advocate, the Newark Archdiocese weekly newspaper, called Sr. Inez and asked her to recommend a writer. Sr. Inez knew just the person, and with that, a 50 year calling began, matching Anne’s passion for journalism to her Catholic faith.

Anne’s recognition of the need to speak out on social justice issues, racial inequality and human needs could not have been better placed than Newark in the 1960’s. She brought a Christian perspective to the relevant issues of the day and truly made a difference! In 1981 she co-founded the Catholic New York and was later presented the St. Francis de Sales award for her outstanding contribution to Catholic journalism.

Anne’s connection with Caldwell was lifelong, and she was honored as alumna of the year, (’67) the Veritas Award (‘87) and with an honorary degree (’99).

In the days following Anne’s death, Catholic New York published several stories from her colleagues. A common thread between them all is Anne’s ability to share her gifts with them – whether it be her writing, her guidance, or even a chance taken by hiring them – gifts that changed the course of their lives. In the 1930’s, Caldwell’s founding sisters saw an underserved population in need - Catholic women. Today, Caldwell serves a diverse population of students who face many economic and financial challenges. Through her estate, Anne once again is honoring Caldwell’s mission and helping to ensue those in need are able to attain the same value based education that led her to her calling. Just as Anne Buckley changed the lives of the countless people she encountered throughout her career, so too will her estate gift positively change the lives of the countless students who benefit from her generosity.
