Beverly Schunk Afonso '65 Paves the Way for Caldwell Science Students

Beverly Schunk Afonso

"Caldwell University has always been there for me," recalls Beverly Schunk Afonso '65. Through her support for scholarships and, most recently, by including the University in her estate plan, Beverly is doing the same for today's Caldwell students.

Beverly's college career had a rocky start. "I did so poorly on the SAT that I was accepted to Caldwell on a temporary basis," she says. Only after she proved her abilities in her first semester would she be able to enroll as a full-time student. Soon, Beverly was studying biology and getting involved in campus activities. "Caldwell taught me to think independently, and to explore leadership positions that in those days would be held by men."

But her dream of earning a college degree was very nearly shattered. "My father was laid off from his job and my mother had just delivered my baby brother. There was no money for college."

Again, Caldwell stepped in. "I didn't know where to turn," she says. "But Sister Bernadette Agnes sensed something was wrong and before I knew it, she had arranged for me to work in the science lab tending mice, as a way to help cover tuition."

Beverly's Caldwell degree and lab experience led to another major turning point. "I started working in research at Schering Pharmaceuticals in Bloomfield, and while there I met my husband, a research chemist from India."

When Beverly decided to pursue graduate work, Caldwell was there to help. "I wanted to enroll in a graduate program at Rutgers, but I hadn't worked in science for 13 years. Sister Joanna suggested I prepare by studying biochemistry at Caldwell. She really encouraged me."

Beverly went on to earn a master's degree in pathogenic microbiology from Rutgers and enjoyed a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry. Now retired, she is focused on philanthropic work in India, where her late husband was born, and in New Jersey. Fortunately, this includes establishing an endowed scholarship for students pursuing science at Caldwell. "Science students have to spend so much time in the lab. It takes a lot of dedication."

"I am so grateful for Caldwell University, and the role it has played in my life. The people here take an interest in each and every student," she continues. Thanks to her forward-thinking generosity, Beverly is ensuring that students today, and in the future, will enjoy the Caldwell University experience.

Like Beverly, you can ensure a bright and promising future for students with a gift in your estate plan. To learn more about extending your support for Caldwell, please contact Lori Funicello at 973-618-3226 or lfunicello@caldwell.edu.
