Caldwell University Alumna Pat McGarrity '60 a Unifying Force of Nature

Pat McGarrity

Pat McGarrity '60 has displayed a lifelong commitment to Caldwell and the Dominican tradition.

If you asked Patricia "Pat" Murphy McGarrity's friends about her, they would all say the same thing: "Pat is the go-to person." Her college classmates remember her as intelligent, reliable and a born leader. The yearbook testifies that she was a member of nearly every club, was awarded the coveted "C" pin, and served as class treasurer for several years.

In addition to pursuing a career in New Jersey social services, Pat married and raised four children. At every stage of life she offered her organizational skills to her community, including the Boy Scouts, the Mental Health Resource Center, and St. Catherine of Siena Parish. As her children finished college, she continued her own education, completing a certificate in public management and a law degree at Rutgers Law School. In retirement, Pat has used her law background to assist family members to execute wills and estate plans.

Pat's commitment to Caldwell and the Dominican tradition has been lifelong. A prayerful person, she has remained an active member of the Third Order, which she joined as a student. She has put her faith into action as a member and trustee of her parish council, as a counselor to women in Rachel's Vineyard retreats and as a member of the board of Cedar Ridge, a senior citizens housing organization. Pat has served on many Caldwell University committees and was a member of the Alumni Board for over 10 years. She has been the rallying force to urge classmates to take trips both national and international, gather for periodic lunches and plan reunions on campus. Pat has shared both time and treasure as a longtime major donor to the University and has included a bequest to the University in her estate plans as well.

Always an avid traveler, Pat continues her treks around the globe and encourages others to join her. She makes a habit of taking grandchildren on Road Scholar trips and is always open to new experiences. No matter where in the world she is, she arranges to be only an e-mail away from her family, friends and members of the Caldwell community who ask her advice on a regular basis.
